Stakeholder Mapping: tips and templates

Stakeholder mapping is a way to visually represent your company’s various stakeholders, that is, individuals and groups relevant to your company, alongside their level of interest in it and their level of importance to the company.

It often times appears similar to charts, but different stakeholders or different groups of stakeholders are categorised and listed the aforementioned chart according to the level of power and interest they exert over the company in question.

The purpose of this is to manage stakeholders because they all hold some degree of influence over the company, some significantly greater than others while some are significantly smaller than others, once again they all have a degree of control over a company and as a result should be given consideration.

Stakeholder power interest grid is way to categorise each stakeholder based on their relation to a project, alongside their power over it. It is essentially a stakeholder influence map. It fits the stakeholders into one of the following categories through a power/influence matrix:


  • High Power/High Interest
  • High Power/Low Interest
  • Low Power/High Interest
  • Low Power/Low Interest


You can fit any stakeholder into one of these categories once you have identified them, and once you’ve done that you can fit them into a stakeholder mapping matrix, split into four categories. Depending on the category, the model suggests different ways on how to deal with stakeholders.

Depending on how stakeholders fit into the stakeholder mapping process, you will need to take specific action in order to ensure that they are either being, managed, informed, monitored or kept satisfied. This is essentially how to do stakeholder mapping.

To define stakeholder mapping would simply be placing the relevant traits of all stakeholders in a grid like above that makes understanding where they stand within the organisation clear and easy to understand. Design thinking stakeholder map is important as your stakeholder map needs to be well thought out so it can be understood.

Stakeholder mapping is an extremely important part of handling stakeholders; without the right approach and methodology towards classifying, identifying and managing the stakeholders in your organisation, you run the risk of creating problems between the organisation and the stakeholders, which can lead to consequences.
